1) Presentation of the Italian pavilion

Presentation

This pavilion highlights the Italian excellence and the « made in Italy ». 10,560 hours of research have been employed for its design.

At the end of the Cardo, the Palazzo Italia is the heart of the seedbed. There you will find a presentation of the Italian know-how, an interactive show on the history of humanity linked to food, a presentation of landscapes and beauties of Italy, a garden enhances biodiversity, but also a vision of an imaginary world without Italy will be provided and, finally, a presentation of Italian markets (in particular culinary traditions and typical products).

The palace is built on four floors with a roof terrace on top. The Palazzo Italia is based on four main blocks arranged around a central square and connected by bridges: the display area, the auditorium, offices and meeting rooms. The building will survive after the expo and it will become a center of technological innovation for the city of Milan.

The cement structure, produced by Italcementi, has an extraordinary photocatalytic ability : when it gets in contact with sunlight, it captures air pollutants and converts them into inert salts. The mortar is made by 80% of recycled materials.

The design

The whole building covers 22,000 square meters and the total estimated cost of this project is 40 million euros. This building has been designed by Nemesis & Partners Srl, Proger SpA and BMS Progetti Srl, after an international competition.

The goals

This project is an opportunity to strengthen and promote the innovative capacity of Italian companies and to support sustainable and environmentally friendly products.

With its pavilion, Italy also wants to enhance its younger and vital energies (« feeding the planet, energy for life »), by refocusing on its culture in the field of nutrition and sustainable development. The seedbed can also be seen as a laboratory of ideas and solutions that Italy imagines for the world.

The exhibition spaces

The exhibition space of the Italian pavilion is composed of a main building that represents the government and the Italian state (called Palazzo Italia), and several exhibition spaces along the Cardo (one of the two main axes of the World Expo of Milan). Palazzo Italia is the meeting point between the organizing country and the other participating countries of the exposure.

The Cardo is a cobblestone road that measures 35 meters wide and 325 meters long. Four buildings are located along this road and they host a variety of Italian institutions. This is the most concrete part of the Italian pavilion, the one in which visitors can get information about the country in the context of food, agriculture, business, science, local products etc.

2)Inspiration

The choice of concept has been oriented on the seedbed because it is the place where trees, the symbol of life and nature, grow. The project is organized around the themes of nature, water and energy, transparency and technology. The architecture is inspired by an « urban forest »
