Expo 2015: the Japanese pavilion

1) Presentation of the Japanese pavilion
The theme of the Japanese pavilion is « The harmony in diversity. » The country actually thinks that his culinary culture is a way to solve problems related to nutrition and hunger as well as those related to the environment. In fact, the varieties of Japanese crops and their production achieved in harmony with nature represent for the country a response to the general theme of the Universal Expo 2015 in Milan: « Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life. »
In this way, dishes made of rice, raw fish and vegetables are placed in the foreground in the exposition, as models of a balanced nutrition, in order to promote worldwide a healthy diet, to defeat the problems related to an unbalanced diet (the cause of various diseases, including obesity). Since 2005 the country has educated families to a better food awareness and its gastronomy stands to be nominated as a « World Heritage Site ».
Natural materials such as wood and bamboo have been employed in its construction and technological as well as energy saving systems have been implemented.
The pavilion has a three-dimensional wooden grid, a recyclable material consisting in a structure designed specifically for the expo. This grid represents the diversity of Japan that defines itself as a « container of diversity » with its four seasons, its natural environments, its food and ecosystem. Among other things, this wooden structure allows to shield from direct sunlight.
The japanese culinary culture will be emphasized also through the several events held in the pavilion.
The pavilion is 4170 square meters, it has a grand entrance on the long side as the traditional houses of Kyoto and it was designed by one of the most famous Japanese architects: Atsushi Kitagawata.
Through this topic, Japan would like to promote its culinary culture presenting it as healthy, sustainable and balanced. Japan would also like to revive its image in the world after the tsunami of 2011 in order to provide support to business and tourism.
Themes and exhibition spaces
The Japanese pavilion raises issues of sharing, of the fight against food waste and it promotes healthy products and education through play. Harmony (understood in an aesthetic sense and in an environmental sense), technology (food storage), the system of transportation and distribution of food are key themes in the pavilion, that will also present solutions for a sustainable exploitation of natural resources.
Two restaurants in different styles will offer visitors the opportunity to discover the excellence of Japanese gastronomy as well as the pavilion as a whole. The first one is an authentic Japanese restaurant, the second is a refreshment area with products available only in Japan.
« Utsuwa » is a Japanese term designating the traditional ceramics as well as their varied style. The pavilion reflects this concept, representing the cultural syncretism and the wealth of the country. The entire design of the pavilion is a mix between tradition and modernity, between aesthetic perfection and respect for the environment.
The three-dimensional wooden structure has been inspired by Japanese lanterns paper reproducing lighting effects: during the night the pavilion will actually shine a mild light through its structure.

3) Japan and agriculture in numbers
- In 2011 there were 4.561 million hectares of usable agricultural area in Japan.
- Approximately 1.418 million people are economically active in agriculture.
